Casino is a 1995 American crime drama film directed by Martin Scorsese. Starring Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Sharon Stone and James Woods. Based on the non-fiction book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas by Nicholas Pileggi.
Casino is about Sam “Ace” Rothstein, a Jewish American top gambling handicapper who is called by the Italian Mob to oversee the day-to-day operations at the Tangiers casino in Las Vegas. Nicholas “Nicky” Santoro is a made man, sent to Las Vegas to make sure that money from the Tangiers is skimmed off the top and the mobsters in Las Vegas are kept in line.
True crime or movies based on true crime have always been one of my favorite genres and Casino is most certainly one of the best. If you are a fan of crime movies, both Ann and I highly recommend Casino. I’ll be the first to point out, Casino is very violent and is NOT suitable for children in anyway what so ever. However, it is a fascinating story. Based on real life activities carried out by the mafia during the 1970s in the Las Vegas casinos. It is amazing to see how much the mafia got away with and what they had to do until the authorities caught up with them. The subtitle sums up the story of Casino perfectly; “No one stays at the top forever.”
